Our balcony had slowly become one of those forgotten areas that collected dirt, and pollen instead of feeling like an extension of our home. It sits right outside our primary bedroom. So I decided it was finally time to give this small balcony a makeover.

The goal was to make the space feel warm, relaxing, and functional without spending a fortune or completely renovating it. And honestly, a few thoughtful changes made a much bigger impact than I expected.

Power Washing the Balcony
Before adding anything decorative, I started by power washing the railing and cleaning years of buildup off the balcony. Look at the difference in the photo below! The right side was power washed and left was not.
This alone completely refreshed the space.
It’s amazing how much dirt and pollen can make outdoor spaces feel tired and neglected. Once everything was cleaned, the balcony instantly looked brighter and more inviting.
Originally, I planned to stain the railing immediately after power washing. However, Rhode Island weather had other plans and days of rain delayed the staining process. Instead of waiting around, I decided to move on to the flooring first.
Deck Tiles Completely Transformed This Small Balcony Makeover
One of my favorite small balcony makeover ideas was installing click together deck tiles from Costco.
The original flooring felt cold and unfinished, but the deck tiles instantly added warmth and texture while making the balcony feel much more finished overall.
What I loved most was how easy they were to install. The tiles clicked together pretty quickly, and for the areas around the posts, I used my Ryobi circular saw to trim the pieces so everything fit properly.
The tiles helped the space start feeling more like an outdoor room instead of just a basic exterior area.
The only con to the tiles is that they scuff easily. I’m not too concerned and really don’t mind it. We plan on being out here in our slippers anyway. I still find it worth it for the price, as it was the most budget friendly tiles I could find and installation was a breeze.
Staining the Railing Warmed Up the Entire Space
Once the weather finally cooperated, I went back and stained the railing using a drop cloth to protect the new deck tiles underneath.
I used Behr semi-transparent stain in the color Tugboat, and it ended up being the perfect warm wood tone for the space. We used the same stain and color for our cedar fence 8 years ago and it still looks great! I love the color!
This step tied everything together.
Between the stained railing and the deck tiles, the balcony immediately started feeling cozier and more elevated.
Adding Privacy and Greenery
One thing I really wanted was for the balcony to feel more private and surrounded by greenery over time.
I added a planter with a trellis and planted star jasmine and honeysuckle so the vines can eventually grow upward and create a natural privacy screen.
I also added railing planters with brackets, flowers, and additional plants throughout the balcony to soften the space and make it feel more lived in.
Plants really changed the overall atmosphere and helped the balcony feel calmer and more inviting.
Cozy Furniture and Lighting Finished the Balcony Makeover
Once the larger projects were complete, I started layering in furniture and decor to make the balcony feel warm and functional.
I added a small bistro set with an umbrella, a loveseat with cushions, solar powered lanterns, and string lights wrapped around the railing for ambience at night. Shop my balcony collection.
Honestly, the lighting completely changed the mood of the space in the evenings.
The balcony now feels cozy, relaxing, and somewhere we actually want to spend time after a long day. It’s become one of my favorite spots to sit outside with coffee in the morning or unwind at night.
And the best part is that none of the changes were overly complicated or expensive.
